LATEST FROM WANGANUI.
By an extra published by the Wanganui Times ou the oth inst., Ave learn that a smart engagement took place at Keternarai on the 3rd inst., between Major M'Donnell's little party and the Hau-Haus, in which the latter were sigually defeated. The correspondent says :-— At 12-30 a.m. this morning, the force entered the bush, and feeling its way cautiously, halted at dfnvn. Captain Kemp, Native Contingent, was then sent to the front, with l(i men to reconnoitre. He soon came iu sight of a number of Hau-Haus going in the direction of our main body, but before he could send word back to that effect they had discovered us ond at once opened fiiv. The Rangers and Contingent immediately rushed at them iu gallant style, and one of the smartest skirmishes on recoid ensued. The Hau-Haus, who fought bravely, soon broke and lied, and were pursued by the force right through the bush, across a natural clearing (here Captain Ross was wounded) and into the bush on the other side for some distance, where they were seen j dragging their wounded over an earthwork. | As M'Donnell wisely did not wish to risk a general engagement with a tired force, and encumbered with wounded, he called for a halt, and shortly after the force returned to camp, which it reached at I p.m. The casualties on our side were as follows : — Captain Ross, Wanganui Rangers, musket ball, left forearm, severely. Sergeant Coffee, No. 10 Co. T.M.S., musket ball, right thigh, dangerously. Corporal Guthrie; Patea Rangers, musket ball, left thigh, severely. Private Corbett, Patea Rangers, musket ball, right aim, dangerously. Of the Hau-Haus, six dead bodies were counted on the line of pursuit. Their wounded were all dragged away or hidden in the dense undergrowth. 'Five guns, besides tomahawks, etc., were captured. No prisoners taken. The friendly natives at Waingongora report the loss of the enemy to be very heavy.
