A public meeting in connexion with** the Stoke Band of Hope was held in the schoolroom, Stoke, on Friday evening, the 27th insfi. The room was well filled with children and their parents. Mr. Crisp, President of the Nelson Band of Hope, occupied the chair, and delivered a suitable address to the children. The meeting was addressed also by Mr. I. M. Hill and Mr. J. T. Smith. The wonders of the magic lantern were exhibited to the delight of all present, by Mr. James Hill. The children were quiet and well-behaved. A vote of thanks was given to the Nelson friends. Afc the close of the meeting four signed the Band of Hope pledge. A part of the grand level of the Mississippi river bad given way, flooding 13 parishes of Southern Louisiana and causing au immense destruction of property.
