The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, JULY 20, 1866. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.
Thursday, July 19, 1866. Present, Mr. Bentley in the chair ; Messrs. Burn, Burns, Carter, Watts, Rout, anf 1 Wright. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.' Several tenders were received for the work in Examiner-street. None of them were considered eligible, and it was resolved that the matter stand over till the next meeting. Messrs. Carter and Watts reported on work necessary in Nile-street. They thought one man could do the work in a week. The report was adopted aud the work ordered to be done, Messrs. Bentley and- Burn reported that they had been unable to see a solicitor in reference to the engrossing of deeds. The matter to stand over. Messrs. Rout and Burns reported on the work required in Milton-grove. It was ordered that the work be done in the rhanner recommended by them. Messrs. Watts, Burns, and Carter reported that they had examined the property to which Mr. Jennings had drawn the attention of the Board. They did not see any cause for complaint. The report was adopted. The work was inCollingwood-street. . A. discussion arose as to the best mode of filling up the approaches of the bridge at the junction of Tas- j man and Nile-streets. It was ordered that the Secretary report at the next Board night. I In reference to the gravelling of Trafalgar and Bridge-streets, Mr. Burn' entered into some details. He suggested that tenders be advertised for the work, and that the Secretary report on the Waimea Road at the next meeting. A resolution, based on this suggestion was adopted. The Secretary produced a sheet of the arrears of the 7th and Bth years. The total amount was £702 17s. 9d. The Secretary stated that the amount was in course of collection, and amused the Board by stating that some person be had called on had pleaded some curious set off. It was suggested that all the defaulters be sued, except in the instances in which the property had changed hands. The matter was left in the hands of the Secretary to do the best he could with, what a member called, a " dead horse." A special meeting was ordered for the 27th inst., to inspect the balance sheet, and prepare the annual report. Mr. Watts reported on the dark state of the street near the Post Office. He thought it was competent for the Board to memorialize the General Government to put proper lamps near the building. The Ohristchurch Post Oflice was well lighted. The Secretary was instructed to write' to Christchurch, to ascertain whether the General or Provincial Government put up the lamps outside the Post Office. A letter was read frqpa Mr. James Leech of Col-lingwood-street, offered to pay £26 10s. towards the expense of work required there, if the board would pay the remainder. It was resolved that Collingwood and Grove-streets, be included in the tenders about to be advertised, and that the board accept Mr. Leech's offer. A letter was received from Mr. C. M'Gee offering to buy any glazed piping the board might have to dispose of. It was resolved .that .Mr. M'Gee have what pipes he may require on condition that he replace them within three months. A letter was received from Messrs. Cawthron, Gibbons, and Stocjc, asking the board, to repair the road and footpath, frojn the Government Wharf to the Custom House. -The secretary was instructed to attend to the application to repair the road and path, but not to fix the posts which the applicants required near the P. N.Z.' Co.'s- office. A letter was read' Vfrom Mr. Kingdon askine; permission ±o_shift a fehw on Section 185. Permission i granted. .:"'"." Permission wasgjven to Mr. Dupuis to put up a street board in Trafalgar-street. Mr. Polglase asked permission of the board to reopen the wattling tliey had put up near his property. The board refuseg -permission, to re-open the wattling, and informeilhhn through the secretary, that they would hold hith responsible for any damage his cattle might do to the fence. Mr. J. Garrard informed the board that he was willing to supply his boulder metal at 6s. per cubic yard. It was resolved that the secretary negociate with Mr. Garrard for a supply of metal, to see if he would be willing to supply it at ss. per yard. A discussion, arose on the state of Hampden- street, and the secretary was authorised to employ additional labor to expedite the improvements there. The following accounts were passed.
