The lion. Mr. Prendergast obtained leave to intro- . duce an act for extending the jurisdiction of district courts. The bill was road a first,. time. The lion. ?\Jr. Johnston introduced a bill to consolidate the law relating to Building and Land Societies. It was read a first time. The Oyster Fisheries Bill, the Partnership Law Amendment Bill, and the liesident Magistrate's Bill, were read a second time, and referred to committee. The hon. Mr. Mantell complained that his remarks respecting General Chute, had been misrepresented by the public press. The hon. Lieut.-Col. Whitmore moved, That in the opinion of this Council it is desirable that a limit should be fix'.'d by law to the number of its members. That in the opinion of this Council the number of members shall not exceed thirty-eight. In order, however, to enable the Government at all times to be properly represented the Governor should be entitled once during any session of the General Assembly, to summon two members to take their seats* in this Council beyond thirty-eight, to fill vacancies in tha Council arising from death or any other cause, until the number is again reduced to thirty-eight. Carried. Mr. Prendergast moved, For leave to introduce an Act amending the Lhw of Evidence and Practice in Criminal Trials, and for facilitating the despatch of business before Grand Juries. Leave was granted and the bill read a first time. The Partnership Law Amendment Bill was read a third time and passed. The District Court Jurisdiction Extension Bill and the Building Land Societies Bill were read a second time and passed through committee.
