We (West Coast Times) have much satisfaction in announcing that another most useful and important work is completed, and Hokitika and Greymouth placed in direct and instant.communication with each other. We allude to the electric telegraph, which for some weeks has been in the course of construction, and is now open to the public. The Westlaud observer of the 30th ult. contains the following news from the Okarita gold-field -.—This week the mining intelligence of the district is very meagre. The weather has been such that little progress has been made in working on the beaches.; less has been done by the claimholders inland; and no news has been received from the remoter parties known to be prospecting, or obtaining prospects, iv the-direction of the Waiho and the Waitaki. On the , beaches work has uot only been in term}) ted, but a large amount of past labor lias been made valueless by the late gales occurring on the top of spring tides, creating a surf which has again effectually demolished the workings on the majority of the seaward claims.
