NOTES AND NEWS.
The New Zealand Loan.—- In committee of supply in the House of Commons, on February 26, Mr. Childers moved that the sum of £754,529 should be granted for the purpose of re-paying advauces to the treasury chest of New Zealand, and other expenses, such advances to be repaid by the New Zealand Government. It was stated two years ago, when the right hon. gentleman the Secretary to the Colonies, made a proposal with reference to the grant for the New Zealand loan, that the New Zealand Government had incurred a debt of £500,000 on account of the war, in addition to the expeuses of 1847 and 1848 ; aud that the proposed grant, if. accepted by the colonies, would iuvolve the payment at once in money of the £500,000. The committee were aware of the circumstances of the grant, aud it was necessary to take this vote, in order to repay tbe treasury-chest the sum to which it was indebted. The vote was agreed to.
The Grey River Argus, of Saturday last, in a leading article says, whilst striving to gain every possible advantage from Canterbury, the people should not tbe less exert themselves to accomplish the scheme of annexation to Nelson. We regard that measure as the only one that can ever prove satisfactory to this district, and as one that will, if carried out. be the means of giving this port a position of importance ifc can never hope otherwise to gain.
We extract the following from the. Waikouaiti Herald of the 23rd instant :— The inhabitants of Waikouaiti will no doubt be pleased to learn that the exhibits forwarded from this district to the Dunedin Exhibition have at length been received by the Local Committee here. It is now over twelvemonths since the Exhibition closed, and although repeated application has been made by the local committee in reference to the return of the exhibits, no notice appears to have been taken of their reasonable and just demand until the present time — for why or wherefore we can't conceive. It certainly seems very extraordinary, and great carelessness attaches somewhere.
Another Attempt to lay the Atlantic Telegraph Cable.— A prospectus has been issued of the Anglo-American Telegraph Company, Avith a capital of £60,000, iu shares of £10 each. This company has
been established for the purpose of executing in the course of the present year the great enterprise of laying a submarine cable between Ireland and Newfoundland, so as to connect telegraphically the old world and the new, and to raise the cable partially laid last yeai', in order to complete a second line to America. The circumstances attending the recent attempts to carry out this work have greatly increased the confidence of all those who have been engaged in it, and they arc convinced that this renewed effort will be attended with success. The whole length of 1,212 nautical miles of cable laid from the Great Eastern in July last continues perfect, according to the daily reports of the electricians in charge at Valentia ; and the observations taken by Captaia James Anderson, of the Great Eastern and staff Commander Henry A. Moriarty, R.N., have determined the position of the broken end with the utmost accuracy. Mr. Canning and the other engineers engaged in the late expedition are confident that with the machinery and tacklenow being prepared, they will be able to raise the cable and complete the line to Newfoundland. The 1,070 nautical miles of cable, which has remained on board the Great Eastern since August last, is certified to be in as perfect condition as when it was shipped. — Evening Sun, March 9.
