LOCAL NEWS.
From information which has been received privately, we learn that Mr. Warden Hynnersley had agreed with a large prospecting party "who were desirous of examining a river about 40 miles to the northward of the Grey, about which rumours of recent find had been flying about," to charter the small steamer Woodpecker, in conduction with them, paying half the expense. That vessel had left the G-rey last week ; nothing further had been heard, but probably by the Kennedy we will have full particulars. "We observe in the West Coast papers the prospectus of a Company to form a railway from Hokitika to Greymouth. The capital is to be £30,200, in £10 shares. The Pro- ; vincial Government will give the Company the use of the land to lay the permanent way, and the works are to be constructed subject to the approval of the Provincial Engineer. The line is to be opened for traffic as sooq as it is laid to the Arahua river. The projectors calculate that the investment will yield a return of 20 per cent, per annum. / Coach Accident. — Ou Sunday last, as Rowley's two-horse van was leaving Nelson / for Richmond, one of the horses stepped on the Dun Mountain line, in consequence of which the coach was overturned aud the passengers thrown out. Mrs. Rowley, who , was in the coach, was slightly bruised ; the \rest of the passengers escaped injury. Injury from a Horse. — The other evening, as a boy seven years of age, the son of Mr. Alfred Parmenter, was leading one of Mr. Pratt's horses to the river, the horse kicked him in the face, the hoof striking him just above the jaw, and inflicting a severe wound extending from the cheek to the eye. It is not ascertained if a fracture has taken place. "We understand the little sufferer is progressing favorably. Provincial Land and Building Society. — The usual monthly meeting of this societywas held last evening, for the receipt of subscriptions. The amount received was £515 Bs. Bd. There were eight notices of with-, drawal given. It would appear, from the sum paid, that the affairs of the society are in a highly satisfactory state.
