LOCAL NEWS.

.Resident Magistrate's Court. — In this court this morning, John Rowley was fined 10s. and costs for allowing his horse to wander in the streets. James Planche was remanded on a charge of assaulting Charles Watson on the 3rd of April last. The defendant got out of the way, and was arrested yesterday. The complainant is not to be found at present, which led to the postponement of the case.

Sitting of the Supreme . Court. — The criminal sitting of this Court, will take place on Wednesday next, before bis Honor Mr. Justice Johnston, who arrived from Wellington, by the Taranaki, yesterday. The criminal calendar is very light. The only cases to be tried are — Mrs. Spendlove, for infanticide, and Fanzelow for sheep-stealing, the prosecutors being Messrs. Wiesehavern, and Jeffrey. The Insolvency Court will sit on Wednesday. Prisoners at Large. — We see from the Police Gazette,that adescription isgiven of the prisoners recently escaped from Cobden gaol.

R. Stone, for whose apprehension £50 is offered, is described as follows : — Short build, ■dark brown hair, nose inclined at the bridge, grey eyes, one of which has a slight cast towards the right ; the little finger of the right hand bent. John Langton, for whose apprehension a reward of £25 is offered, is a man of 5 feet 10 inches in height, medium build, and stoops ; complexion dark, forehead high and narrow; age, 28. James M'Gavin, for whose appreheusion a reward of £25 is offered, is thus described: height 5 feet 6 inches; hair black, complexion dark; age. 45. The Neio Zealand Gazette of the 7th inst. contains the following : — Captain Nathaniel George Morse to be Major ; Major Nathaniel George Morse to command the Militia and Volunteers in the province of Nelson.
