ORIGINAL: SONG— MY MAGGIE. If 'twere not the beams of my Maggie's black e'e, That kindles in kindness while looking on me. My life "would be weary, my bosom be sad ; If 'twere not the smiles of her bly the rosie face,, Few joys would be mine in my life's weary race; But Maggie's sweet features, and love-lighted smiles, Quite make me forget all my troubles and toils, Her looks are so cheery, her smiles are so.glad. When Spring flings her beauties o'er mountain and dale, And bids the wild flow'rets arise in the vale. The warblers, delighted, rejoice on the tree; I traverse the valley to see the flow'rs spring. Or wander the woodlands to hear the birds sing, Or climb. the steep mountain, or stray by the stream; But ever, still ever, for ever I dream Of Maggie's fair features and love-speaking e'e. When Summer's effulgence is dazzling around, How bright is the landscape, how sweet is the sound — The soft, bumming music of buzzard and bee; Prom flow'ret to flow'ret, on light silken wings, To pilfer their sweetness, the little bee sings; Creation is teeming with life's happiness, But Summer has nothing to equal the bliss I feel in the light of my Maggie's black e'e. When Autumn's abundance is spread on the plain, In flocks, or in hersels, or fields of ripe grain, The farmer delights in the fruits of his toil ; Hope rises, exulting, and swells his proud breast, And bids him look forward to riches and rest; I've seen his abundance, yet felt that his farm Had nothing upon it to bless me or warm, As Maggie does warm me with lier loving smile. When dark days of Winter bid gusty winds blow. In wild sweeping fury, from hills topp'd with snow, To dash the last leaflet from flow'ret and tree; I heedlessly harken the rain pelting by, I carelessly listen the wind's winter cry; While Maggie is kindly, I reck n<st the storms, I live in the sunshine, and bask in the charms, Of her love-lighted smiles and the beams of her e'e. Nelson, April, 1866. H. Within the last few mouths the town of Wanganui has been embellished and enlarged by the erection of buildings that would be considered a credit to any town in the colony. In town and country, progress is the order of the day upon every side, and it requires no prophet, nor the son of a prophet, to predict for this town and its surrounding districts a future commensurate to the energy and enterprise of their population, and the fertility of the splendid country which they occupy. — W.
