WEST COAST GOLD-FIELDS
GREYMOUTH. We are given to understand it is very probable that the rural land, recently taken on agricultural leases, on the flat above Cobden, will shortly be sold, as well as several blocks of agricultural land along the river Grey. Every section of the flat has been taken up, aud great progress has been made by several of tho occupants in clearing the laud, and preparing it for crops. Those who have already planted seeds, speak highly of the productive quality of the soil. Withiu the last day or two, some more very good claims have been opened on the North Beach, a mile ov two beyond the Darkies terrace. As soon as the discovery was made known the ground was quickly taken up. Mr. Coulson, the Harbor-master, ha 3 at the request of T. Kynnersley, Esq., R.M., made a careful examination of the berth to be occupied by vessels lying at the Cobden wharf. He reports that the bottom, ten feet from the wharf towards the channel of the river, is quite clear of any dangerous snags or boulders. Steamers can now coal at the wharf with perfect safety, and without fear of detention from shallow water. The Panama Company is not by any means using this port fairly. Time after time steamers are advertised to call off the port for passengers, but in most cases either the steamer does not put in an appearance at all, or owiug to defective arrangements for takingout passengers, the latter are continually being disappointed, and put to serious loss and incouveuience. We must say that Greymouth is entitled to more consideration than it has hitherto received at the hands of the Company, and we would urge upon the agents the necessity of making strong representations on the subject to the proper quarter.
