LOCAL NEWS.

Electric Telegraph. — We have been requested to advise the public that the charges on messages to Hokitika have been reduced. The manager of the station, owing to a misunderstanding, has been charging in excess of the rates, and will refund to any person who has sent messages to Hokitika, through his office. Nelson Institute Exhibition. — This exhibition was closed on Saturday evening last, after having been open to the public 36 days. It has been well patronised, few of

the town-people kept away from it, and nearly all the strangers who came to the town, paid it a visit. Great credit is due to the committee for the order and regularity whicii characterised the exhibition, the carrying out of which was due to the vigilance, patience and activity of the Librarian aud his assistant. There is a nucleus of a very good museum at the Institute, which is continually increasing, aud will no doubt be added to by some of the exhibitors who have recently sent objects there. We understand that none of the objects have been lost or damaged, a fact whicii is highly creditable to the multitude who visited the exhibition. The Mail for Europe. — We remind our readers that the English mail by the Airedale closes at 5 p.m. to-morrow. We would also advise them if tliey require postage stamps to-morrow afternoon, to procure them from the licensed vendors — as the time of the post office authorities is frequently taken up to an inconvenient extent by applications for stamps just before the mail closes. West Wanganui Coal. — We have heard several people who have used this coal in their households speak highly of its qualities. They say that, besides giving out greater heat than Newcastle, it lasts much longer. The ashes also frequently retain fire all through the night, so servants in cleaning out the grates in the morning should be careful not to throw them upon anything liable to burn. Anniversary of the Wesleyan Sabbath School, RicmrOND. — To-morrow evening a tea meeting will be held in the Wesleyan Church, Richmond, in aid of the funds of this institution. Afterwards a public meeting will take place, and several speakers from other parts will deliver addresses.
