LYTTELTON.
Our' markets have exhibited a little more animation during the past week, and inquiries for goods have been more frequent than for some weeks past. The arrivals of the Cissy and Victory will supply our market with very many goods much wanted, and already some considerable parcels have been sold to land. Wc look fbr high prices for such articles as bacon, hams, cheese, curran' s, etc. We hear of large purchases being made of corn-sacks, in anticipation, we presume, of higher prices ruling. Some good parcels ot candles have also changed hands, and inquiries aro being made for woolpacks, induced we imagine by the lowness of the market rates. We understand that an attempt is about to be made by some enterprising carters to carry light goods overland to Hokitika, so as to compete with the sea traffic. We shall be exceedingly glad to find their efforts crowned with success, as it would have a decidedly beneficial influence upon our trade and commerce, more especially in the winter season, when the coast renders the sea traffic very dangerous and uncertain'. The demand for Stock is already greatly on the increase, and is influencing prices. — L. Times, March 30.
