WANGANUI.
A melancholy boat accident occurred at the Wangaaui Heads yesterday. The schooner Shamrock, from Fiji, was anchored outside, Captain Hayes unwilling to lose time, attempted to land his passengers for this port by means of a small boat totally unfit for the purpose. The boat left the ship with the mate, two sailors, and the son of our respected townsman H. B. Eoberts, Esq., also three Miiories, from Fiji, one a female. On approaching the surf, the woman told the mate that the boat would be swamped, and offered to swim ashore with him. She jumped overboard, and directly afterwards the boat upset; the woman exerted herself to the utmost to save the mate, but without success — the four Europeans were drowned. The captain set sail soon afterwards, but made no report to the customs or elsewhere, of the loss of his passengers. — Abridged from the Wanganui Times, March 27.
