Serious Acciuent. — Yesterday as Mr. Porceili of Bridge-street, was returning in a trnp from the races, and coming down the bill on the Waiwea-road, near Snow's, a horseman persisted in riding before the cart. Mr. Porceili shouted to bim to go on one side or the other, but in vain. Mr. Porceili, says he, thinks his horse stumbled over a stone. From whatever cause, the horse fell, upset tlie cart, aud threw all those Avfio Avere riding in it, on the road. Mr. Porceili is severely bruised, but tlie greatest sufferer is Mrs. Cottier of the Anchor Inn, Haven-road, who had both legs broken, and now lies in the Hospital, we understand, ia a fair way of recovery. Petroleum at Taranakl — A specimen of the oil now being discovered at Taranaki, has been shown us by Mr. Oxford. It was obtained at a depth cf CO feet, to which depth the parties engaged in the venture have now sank. Tho oil floats ou the surface of the water which abounds in the shaft, and is skimmed of when found iu sufficient quantity. The shaft is worked hy a party of .iour. men, who have taken 50 acres of ground from the Government, on a lease of five , -years. The ground is situated betweeu the two inland sugar-loaves. From the presence of gasses in large quantities, the working party feel confident of reaching, ere long, the oil of which they are in search. It is their present intention to draw the water out of the shaft, and sink another depth of 20 feet. : It is to be hoped that the speculation of thb working men will prove successful, and appearances are certainly in favor of success. A specimen of the oil may be seen at Mi". .. '■Lightbahd's, Trafalgar-street. '" '■' '' \ •']
