GRANT FOR HEALTH CAMP

Borough Council Gives £lO

ARRANGEMENTS WELL

ADVANCED

“You’ve left it to me, and that’s not quite fair,” said the Mayor (Mr.C. W. Tyler) at Wednesday’s night’s Council meeting when the question of a grant for the Health Camp came up for discussion. Three Councillors voted in favour of £lO, and three for £5. “I’ve spent £2O on the Camp already,” said Mr Tyler. “I’ve had my fifteenth trip to town on business for it. There have been fights every day to have the camp transferred elsewhere. There has been a lot of opposition to the damp being held here. But we got the backing of the Health Department, and that settled it. If it conies to my decision, I think the Council is fully entitled to grant £lO.

And so it was decided. < Cr Keir first of all moved that £5 bo granted. Cr Ayers said he thought that for four months £5 was too small. The Council had a certain responsibility to help. The Mayor, said that no general appeal for cash had been made in Rangiora. It would be quite in order for the Council to make a substantial grant. Cr Keir then raised his nomination to £lO. • • .

Cr J. A. Ivory moved an amendment that the amount be £5. This was seconded by Cr Taylor. On a division, Crs Ivory, Martyn, and Taylor voted for the smaller amount, and Crs Ayers, Ager and Keir for £lO. On a casting vote, the Mayor decided for the latter.

Present at the meeting were the Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) and Councillors. C. S. Ayers, W. T. N. Keir, H. 11. Taylor, F. T. Ager, F. E. Martyn, J. A. Ivory, and the Town Clerk (Mr J M. Fraser). Apologies were received from Crs Prosser and Keir.
