Out and About in Rangiora

PERSONAL Mr Ron. Edlin, who has been away from Rangiora on a visit to Australia and the North Island, was a visitor to the town this week. Mrs 11. Walls senr. and Mrs L. Walls left for the north on Tuesday evening to spend a holiday in Auckland.

The engagement is announced of Joyce Mavis, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. K. Forward, Rangiora, to George Henry, youngest son of Mr and Mrs R. A. Carpenter, St. Albans, Christchurch.

Mr H. M. Denton has been appointed secretary of the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association.

The resignation of Mr E. W. Whitworth from the Rangiora Borough Council was accepted with regret at the Council meeting held on Wednesday night.

EXTRA POLICEMAN After continued application by the Rangiora Borough Council, word has now been received that an additional constable is to be appointed to Rangiora. He will be Constable A. Beattie, of Hokitika. Constable Beattie is a married man with a small family, and is expected to arrive shortly. At present Constable A. Dunne is relieving at Rangiora in place of Constable Simmonds.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT In the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., judgment for plaintiff by default, with costs, was given in the following cases: Frederick Cobden Cox v. Frederick L. Sanders, claim £6; L. M. King v. S‘. Cosgrove, £6/7/-; Alice Ileid v. William Joseph Davis, £44/1/5, and possession of a property on or before December 22; G. W. Pearson and Sons, v. G. J. Stone, £7/6/9; same v. F. Witbrock, £5/8/6. On a judgment summons H. W. Spicer was ordered to pay J. Henry (Mr A. C. Fraser) £3/7/7 forthwith in default three days’ imprisonment with hard labour.

The Labour Department (Mr R. T. Bailey) proceeded against Martin Quirk for a penalty of £lO for having kept an incomplete set of wages and time books. The Department submitted evidence that work 'done by a woman had not been entered or paid for. The witness concerned denied having worked for defendant without being paid, and in view of this the Department was non-suited. The Magistrate, commenting on witness’s evidence, said that ‘‘he feared the lady’s loyalty to her friends had slighty overcome her frankness.”

HAYDN’S “CREATION” The Ilangiora Musical Society will give a performance of Haydn’s “Creation” on December 8 in the Town Hall. This great work, which is full of beautiful solos and impressive choruses, should appeal to all, and even the uninitiated will find delight in hearing the bright and spontaneous production. A big effort is being made by the local Society to make the concert a success. Outstanding Christchurch soloists have been engaged. The Choir will number 65, being augmented by members of the Christchurch Harmonic Society and Malvern Musical Society. The performance will have piano and orchestral accompaniment. A full rehearsal of the major work is being held at Kaiapoi on Monday, November 29.

CROQUET At a croquet tournament held on Saturday last the club’s first prize for senior players was won by Mrs G. Gibbs Jordan, and the lucky number by Mrs J. C. Banfield. Mrs It. J. Logan’s prize for junior players was won by Mrs C. W. S. Loffhageu, and the lucky number by Mrs H. H. Matthews.

Last week a junior flag match was played against Now Brighton, results being as follows: — Doubles—Mesdames Bruere and Mehrtens 26, Miss Foster and Mrs Sutton 20; Mesdames Hargreaves and Payne 26, Mesdames Whiteley and Kershaw 20; Mesdames Loffhagen and Scott 26, Mesdames Beardsley and Mitchell 16.

Singles—Mrs Bruere 19, Miss" Foster 18 (unfinished); Mrs Mehrtens 21, Mrs Sutton 8 (unfinished); Mrs Hargreaves 26, Mrs Whiteley 16; Mrs Payne 26, Mrs Kershaw 5; Mrs Loffhagen 26, Mrs Beardsley 11; Mrs Scott .24, Mrs Mitchell 15 (unfinished).
