Rubbish Fires on the Sabbath

(To the Editor of The Gazette)

Sir, —While I often see business men and others working in their gardens on a Sunday, even though some do not work at all on ■ Saturdays and others for only half a day, I consider that the matter is one for their own consciences to decide, as it can hardly bo said that they are annoying or interfering with anyone. But I think it is a bit over the odds when in a burst of energy they light rubbish fires on Sunday. Probably it is only thoughtless want of consideration for others, but it is not pleasant for those who have other ideas as to how the day should be spent to have to see and smell clouds of smoke arising from neighbouring back yards. Apart from this aspect, I believe that the Borough by-laws (usually more honoured in the breach than in the observance) prohibit the lighting of fires outdoors without permits from the Council, and surely these are not granted to Sunday gardeners. This letter is prompted by the fact that yesterday the atmosphere in the vicinity of one of the churches (which I did not attend) was decidedly smoky. —Yours etc.,
