Out and About in Kaiapoi

MR HERCUS’S MINISTRY CLOSES Sunday next will mark the close of the ministry in Kaiapoi of the Rev. G. W. T. Hercus, when Mr Hercus will conduct his final service in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, before leaving for Fordell, Wanganui.

R.S.A. SMOKE CONCERT

The half-yearly smoke concert of the Kaiapoi Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the club rooms on Saturday evening. The president of the Kaiapoi branch, Mr G. Hirst, presided over a large attendance, members being present from the Christchurch, Amberley, Rangiora, and New Brighton Associations.

During the evening a concert party organised by Mr A. L. Emerson rendered items. Those who contributed were Messrs A. E. Emerson, Graham Young, F. Hopgood, Hector Fowler, and H. Hoyle.

The following toasts were honoured: “The District Vice-President,” proposed by the chairman and responded to by Mr J, Macleod (Rangiora district vice-president); “Visiting Associations,” proposed by Mr W. H. Stark and responded to by Mr A. L. Emerson (executive member Christchurch Association), Mr J. W. Macleod (president Rangiora Association), Mr G. Warwick (president Amberley Association), and Mr A. Nesbitt (president New Brighton Association); “Our Friends,” proposed by Mr J. Gordon and responded to by Mr R. Bartley (K.W.M.C. Bowling Club), Mr H. Tavendale (Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club), Mr J, A. Mealings (chairman of the Waimakariri Harbour Board), and Mr B. 0. Priddis (Christchurch R.S.A. Bowling Club); “Entertainers,” proposed by the chairman and responded to by Mr H. Hoyle.

AMATEUR WRESTLING

The first of the inter-club matches for the P. R. Climie Shield was commenced at Woolston Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. The following clubs competed: Woolston (W), Papanui (P), Toe H (TH), Shima’s Gym (S), and Kaiapoi (K). The following are the results to date: —

Flyweight—G. Ellis (W) 1 fall defeated C. Clark (TH); J. Coup (K) 1 fall defeated J. P. Gibbs (TH). Bantam weight—A. Morris (K) defeated F. C. Read (TH) on points. Featherweight—G. Topp (K) defeated V. Robertson (TH) on points; J. Barnes (P) 2 falls, defeated C. Williams (W). Welterweight—J. Capill (K), 2 falls, defeated C. Barker (TH); V. Cairns (W), 1 fall, defeated L. McAllen (P). Middleweight—A. McKenzie (P), 1 fall, defeated W. D. Gordon (K). Light-heavyweight —I. Shaw (K), 2 falls, defeated S. Smith (P). Open class—C. J. Pullan (S) defeated G. Harris (W) on points. The finals will be held next Tuesday night at Woolston.

KAIAPOI GOLF CLUB

A stroke handicap played at the Kaiapoi links on Saturday resulted as follows: —E. J. Corcoran, 73-7-66; R. C. Stewart, 86-17-69; A. W. Leithead, 77-6-71; H. H. Blackwell, 77-5-72; J. Millard, 75-2-73.

DANCE AT PINES BEACH

The Pines Beach Association held a very popular dance last Saturday evening. There was a good attendance, which was responsible for a large sum being made for beach improvements. Music for dancing was played by Mr F. Miller’s Dance Band, with extras by Mr H. T. Wisher and Alex Campbell’s Dance Band. Mr J. McGarry was M.C.

During the evening an exhibition tap dance was given by Mr Fred Rosindale and Mr Frank Garland. Jsovelty dances were won by Miss O. Pearce and Mr W. RETURNED SOLDIERS MEET

The monthly meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Association rooms on Monday night. The president, Mr G. Hirst, presided.

Invitations were received from the Rangiora R.S.A. to attend the annual smoke concert on November 27, and from the Rangiora R.S.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary to attend a social evening on November 20.

Arrangements were made for the cake stall in aid of the children’s Christmas party which is to be held on December 18.

PLUNKET SOCIETY

The president (Mrs H. Mclntosh) presided 'at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi branch of the Plunket Society. Nurse Horne reported that the attendance at the rooms during the month was 41 adults, 39 babies, and five preschool children. Eighteen visits had been paid to homes and three new mothers had been visited. It was decided to hold the annual children’s fancy dress party in the Orange Hall on Saturday afternoon, November 27. Arrangements were made for the various stalls, and prizes were allotted for the winners of fancy costume competitions. Those present were Mesdames Hector Mclntosh, R. C. Stewart, M. Greenwood, H. H. Blackwell, H. J. Mclntosh, E. Bristow, H. Adams, E. Gray, L. 11. Oram, E. Clothier, W. H. Keetley, W. C. Tourell and S. J. Richards.

OLD SCHOLARS’ REUNION

The Kaiapoi School Old Scholars’ Association held its annual reunion in the old school, Hilton Street, on Saturday afternoon. More than 200 old pupils were present from all over New Zealand.

The President of the Association (Mr P. G. Hunt) said that during the past year the Association had been assisting the school library and had been successful in reorganising the Alexander Memorial Fund. He said the large attendance and the distance travelled by some of the old pupils showed the keen interest that was still being taken in the old school days. . Among those present were Mesdames T. Magistrate’s Court

SITTING AT KAIAPOI (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) At Wednesday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Kaiapoi there was only a light calendar. John Frazer Tucker, charged with riding a motor-cycle without a driver’s licence, was convicted and fined 10/ and ordered to pay costs 3/-. Civil Cases Judgment by default was given for the plaintiff in the following cases:— O. M. Williams v. R. Ellmers, costs only, 15/-; I. Stark ,v. D. Wright, claim £l7/18/9; C. A. Walls v. S. Murfitt, £l9/14/5. On a judgment summons D. Wright was ordered to pay R. S. Webber £ls 15/6, solicitor’s fee £l/1/-, in default 17 days’ imprisonment. Maintenance On grounds of failure to maintain, a complaint was made against Gordon Gillies French for maintenance, separation, and guardianship orders. Evelyn Glenister French, wife of defendant, stated that her husband was a labourer. There was one child from the marriage. During the past six months she had received practically no money from her husband. He was not registered on the unemployed and did not make any endeavour to obtain work. She said that the house had been kept going on credit. She received 15/- a week from a boarder. William Joseph French stated that he was the father of defendant, and lived quite close to his son. He said he could not make his son out at all, as he made no attempt to find work or maintain his wife and child. He said his daughter-in-law was a good wife. He did not know where his son was at present.

In reply to the Magistrate, witness stated that his son was neither a heavy smoker nor drinker. He had tried to get into touch with him but could not find him.

The case was adjourned for a fortnight to enable inquiries to be made into the whereabouts of defendant.

Women’s Institute LECTURE BY MRS BROWN The Kaiapoi Women’s Institute met last week, Mrs E. J. Corcoran presiding. After tile hymn and creed the minutes were read and confirmed. A letter was read from Mrs Len Parnham announcing that she would do children’s nursing.

Mrs Hassall, the Institute’s sick visitor, reported that she had visited Mrs Ching and Mrs J. Murray and little daughter. All were progressing favourably.

Mrs Kettlewell, from the Lower Hutt Institute, gave a short talk on the activities and interests of her Institute.

It was reported that Mrs Pearce had a new supply of badges at 1/- each, and Institute Christmas cards at 3d each. Mrs Corcoran referred briefly to the visit of the A.C.E. tutor. Next month a Christmas tree party will be held for children of members. The little guests are promised a very happy time. Members' are asked to bring extra cake, etc.

Mrs Simpson, hostess convenor, finishes her duties in December, when Mrs Taylor will take up the office. The singing of two favourite songs by Mrs Yellowlees was: very much appreciated.

The report of the half-yearly Federation meeting was given by Mrs Billcliff.

Mrs Brown occupied the latter part of the afternoon’s programme with a most interesting address on her last trip to Sydney. Mrs Brown is a gifted speaker—fluent, facile,, and to the point. Her fascinating story was well illustrated by many photographs and posters. Members of the Institute hope to hear her again in the not too far distant future.

Competitions were won as follows: — Best bloom, Mrs Corcoran 1, Mesdames C. Joslen and J. O’Connor equal 2, Mrs H. Miller 3. Bowl of ranunculus: Mrs J. O’Connor 1.
