• ; PERSONAL • Mr J. Bayley, “Alkington,” Fernside, will leave tonight for Auckland to spend a month’s holiday with friends. Miss Nancy Parsons, who is travelling on a Carnegie Fellowship grant, has been studying kindergaten and nursery school systems in the United States and Canada for the last eight months. She spent most of her time in New York, where she took courses at Columbia University. Miss Parsons is now in England, and will attend lectures at London University, and will visit nursery schools in England, Scotland, and the Continent. She will probably leave on her return to New Zealand in August or September, travelling via Suez. She is a daughter of Mr W. Parsons, King Street. This week’s meeting of the Presbyerian Women’s Missionary Union in Rangiora was postponed because of the indisposition of the Rev. J. A. F. Watson and Mrs T. A. Will.

Mr H. A. Bennett will act this year on the following committees of the North Canterbury Hospital Board: Benevolent Committee, Public Health Cpmmittee. Mr L. B. Evans will act on the Finance Committee. Mr N. Goldsbury will be a delegate from the Rangiora Fruitgrowers’ Association to the Provincial Conference next week. Messrs Sampson, Macleod, Hassall, and Thomas will represent the Loburn Association. Mr J. W. Macleod (president) will: represent. the Rangiora R.S.A. at the Dominion conference. KITCHEN AFTERNOON , A- kitchen afternoon in honour of Miss Alice Dawson (whose marriage takes place next month) was given by Mrs G. I. Morris, Ayers Street, Rangiora. During the afternoon competitions were won by Mesdames G. Mehrtens and A. W. Thojnas. Among those present were Mesdames T. Dawson, R. Kempthorne, G. Mehrtens, D. Hoskins, R. Stead, L. Curry, A. Collie, O. Alford, A. W. Thomas, G. I. Morris, Misses Alice Dawson, 01wyn Croft, Marion Hassell, Kath Hiatt, Connie Galletly, Thelma Robertson, Minta Hutchison, Nellie Fitzgibbon, Pat and Marjory Henry. AMATEUR CYCLING The following handicaps have been declared for the Rangiora Amateur Cycling Club road race to be held at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday over a distance of approximately 16 miles, from the Plough Hotel:— Scr, L. CHURCH ANNIVERSARY To celebrate the seventy-seventh anniversary of St. John’s Anglican Church, Rangiora, a combined parish tea and social evening was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening. Although the attendance was greatly affected by the unfavourable weather, there was a good number present. About 100 sat down to tea in the supper room at six o’clock, and later attended the service in the church. After the church service, a dance was held, interspersed with items. A charade and topical verses were given by the men of the choir under Mrs J. A. Hughes, and songs were sung by Miss Blanche Smith, accompanied by Miss Naomi Bailey; and Mr Peter Kinley, accompanied by Mrs R. G. A. Logan. Music for dancing was supplied by Mesdames R. F. Watson, A. Halfacre, and R. G. Logan. Mr Jack Bayley was M.C. SALVATION ARMY ANNIVERSARY On Sunday and Monday next, the 53rd anniversary celebrations of the opening of the Salvation Army Corps in Rangiora will be held. Captain James Allott, the officer in charge of the Oxford Corps, assisted by their band, will conduct these special gatherings. In the afternoon an old-time praise meeting will be held, to which those who have long been associated with the corps are specially invited. Mrs Envoy Duggan, who was at the opening of the Corps, will also be present and take part.^ On Monday a programme will be given by the Oxford BancLand other artists, at the conclusion of which a Cornish pasty supper will be provided.

POST-WEDDING DANCE . A dance to celebrate the wedding of their son Frank to Miss Rosa Mitchell was given by Mr and Mrs W. McHugh in the .- Celtic Hall, Rangiora. Many relatives and friends gathered arid spent a happy time in dancing. Music was supplied by Miss Dorothy Brady, with extras by Messrs S. Inns (Christchurch) and F. Evans (Fernside). .. .. ... Novelty dances were won by Misses Norah Fitzgibbon and Mary Egan, and Messrs R. Henry (Loburn) and A. Winter. Messrs G. Mitchell and J. Winter were masters of ceremonies. Variety Evening In view of the approaching marriage of Miss Rosa Mitchell and Mr Frank McHugh, a variety evening was held in their honour in the Celtic Hall. The evening was spent in cards and dancing. The prizes for cards were won by Mrs W. McGrath and Mr F. McGrath. Music for the dancing was played by Miss Dorothy Brady. MACFARLANE CUP GOLF It was erroneously stated in Tuesday’s issue that the first round of the Macfarlane Cup w r ould be played on Saturday. The dates are: First round by August 8, semi-final by September 12, final by October 3. To-morrow a teams match will, be played. Members who have not already entered their names on the list in the club house may hand the names of their teams of four to the secretary before 10 a m. tomorVow. MILK IN SCHOOLS Kaiapoi School Committee appears to be in the same position as Rangiora District School Committee. Efforts to arrange a supply of the regulation pasteurised milk have failed, and the Committee is now making an attempt, as in Rangiora, to secure authority to issue fresh milk. • NEW PLAN FOR METHODIST APPEAL At a meeting of the Rangiora Methodist Church and congregation recently, the matter of the annual flower show and bazaar was considered. It was decided unanimously that for this year only an appeal should be made for direct donations to the new church building fund, and that a congregational effort and social function, which may incorporate some of the usual features of the annual event, should be held about the end of September. LADIES’ HOCKEY The following have been selected to play torriorrow for the Rangiora Ladies’ Hockey Club: — Senior A v. Hornby at Hagley No. 5, 3 p.m.—N. Forward; J. Harper, B. Watkins; N.
