W.C.T.U.

MEETING AT OXFORD The Oxford W.G.T.U. met on Wednesday afternoon, October 18, in the Coronation Hall, the president being in the chair. After the opening prayer and reading, those present joined in a community sing. Solos were contributed by Miss Jean Comyns, one by special request being a Maori song. Some medical facts relating to alcohol were given by the president. Mrs C. Morris, delegate to Provincial Convention, gave a comprehensive and most interesting report of the gathering. Some discussion followed, and a vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Morris; also to Miss J. Comyns and her accompanist, Miss I. Gainsford. A collection was taken up in aid of Maori work. Members were reminded of the annual meeting and election of officers, when all Superintendents would he asked to furnish a report of their department of work.

A letter was received from the secretary of tlie New Zealand Alliance stressing the need of renewed ‘effort for the abolition of the licensed liquor traffic in the Dominion.

Evening at Coldstream NEW MINISTER WELCOMED A social evening organised by the Coldstream Bible Class in honour of tlie Rev. J. A. F. Watson was held in the Coldstream Hall last night. Mr A. G. Stewart welcomed Hie new minister on behalf of the class and Mr Watson replied. Reference was made to the death of Mrs W. Hooper, who had been a. staunch friend of the Sunday School and a loyal helper at all social functions. An enjoyable evening was spent in playing games, and the following items - ere presented: Recitations, Erb Lowe, Frank Lowe, Lottie Murfitt and Jean Henderson.; song, Miss Alice Tull; banjo solo, Roy Kennedy; dialogue, Gresson Melirtens and Jack Pethig; short play, Ivy Crawford, Gresson Melirtens, Keith Toshack and Alec Thompson.

Supper was provided by the ladies and a collection was taken up for the purpose of raising funds to add to the supply of crockery.
