Auckland's Recovery

Scott (56) and Hardstaff (5) were Auckland’s not out batsmen, when tha Auckland-Canterbury match resumed this morning. Hadlee rang a succession of quick bowling changes. The intensity of the attack slowed the batsmen down. Burtt sent down three maidens in succession.* The only break for some time came in Cameron’s second over when Hardstaff straight-drove him for four. Hardstaff released another clinking shot later, a cover-drive whizzing past Leggat for four- off Burtt. i Meanwhile, Scott did not appear to be concerned with scoring. Hardstaff was applauded for the sweetest of square cuts past point for 4 off Burtt. This shot brought him to 30, scored in an hour. The next ball, however, beat him completely as it spun across sharply. Auckland’s first luck of,the morning occurred with the board showing 161. ! Scott, then 65, spooned Bell to midon when Mac Gibbon held the ball for a split second but then dropped a sitter. CLEAL DROPPED i Chappie and Mac Gibbon were brought on again to exploit the new ball. Chappie, with the sixth ball of his first over, got Scott lbw. Scott had taken 3hr 31min to make 68. - The rate of run-making increased when Cleal came in, but he was lucky when dropped by Burtt off Chappie. At lunch Auckland had 252 for 3 | wickets. j HARDSTAFF OUT | Burt and Mac Gibbon were the ! bowlers after lunch. Three runs had been added by Cleal when Burtt tricked Hardstaff completely and bowled him round his legs. 255-5-78. Hardstaff batted 137 minutes and hit six fours and his was easily the most attractive and scientific innings of the match. Blane did not last long, being caught in slips by Leggat.
