Referee Given Stiletto Before Game
LONDON, Mon.—Three British soc cer referees returned from Brazil and decided to ask for protect! - t next time they go there. One of them said: “You heed a stiletto after a match.” In fact, a Brazilian referee gave him one, saying, "You’d better take this—you’ll need it.” • The referees intend to ask the Football Association to give protection to 12 referees who will go to Rio de Janeiro next year for the World Cup ~ series. One of the returning referees, Gillies Dundas, said that at one match in Brazil he was attacked by the crowd, kicked six times, and punched; before escaping in a car, which was stoned.
His colleagues said that, although two aimed policemen accompanied the referees at each match, and the linesmen were armed, the referees were in danger, not only from the crowd, but also from the players, who often use violence when decisions are given against them. The director of a losing team ac- - cused one referee of being drunk. This referee says he is a teetotaller.
