Von Nida, Pickworth For British Open
MELBOURNE, Tue. Australia’s leading golfers, Norman von Nida and Ossie Pickworth, will compete in the British Open, to be played at Troon, Scotland, from July 3 to 7 next year. The Royal Melbourne Golf Club council has granted Pickworth four months’ leave of absence to make the trip. Pickworth will be back in Australia in time to compete in the Australian Open at Kooyonga (Adelaide), from August 24 to 26. It is likely that both von Nida and the South African, Bobby Locke, also will be competing in the Open, and the Ampol £IOOO of 1950, which will be at Glenelg (S.A.), just before the Open. Another Australian star, Peter Thomson, will leave by air on January 10 to compete in some of the big money events in America.
Thomson, who is assistant to George Naismith, at Riversdale Club, Melbourne, has been given leave by his employer and will be away about three months.
