Yes, They Were Wonderful
KAIKOHE. Mon. (Sp.)—Perhaps a Prime Minister is a privileged person. At least, that is what you would think when you sat down at table with him on a marae and saw, dished up before you and your fellow-guests, bowl after bowl of succulent, juicy oysters, fresh from their shells. That is what happened during Mr Fraser’s friendly visit to the new Rapanaist religious cult at Whitiora Pa. Te Tii-Mangonui, Bay of Islands, on Saturday. But you would be mistaken. The Prime Minister is not especiallyprivileged in the matter of oysters. Oysters are a long way out of season, but the Maoris are legally entitled to gather them from certain beds which are vested in Maori ownership—and the Fraserian oysters came from just sfich a bed.
It is strange that the rocks immediately below the T-a at Te Tii are in Crown title and. therefore, are not available to the Maoris for food, but they are able t.o gather their delicacies from the rocks on a headland half a mile across the bay.
