Lower Standasrds For Empire Games Athletes
SYDNEY (By Airmail) —Standards fixed fur Australian candidates for the men's events in .he Empire Games at Auckland (New Zealand) next year are lower than those for the Australian Olympic Gaines team last year, it was announced hero. Australia can enter a maximum of four competitors in < ach track and field
event and six in the marathon race. Under the system of selection Ihc Australian selectors will rank athletes for each event in the order of times they register under recognised control during this season.
The first four ranked will automatically become the team for that event. The main basis of selection will be the Australian championships in Adelaide in January. Standards are: 100 yards, 9.9 sec.; 220 yards. 21..'! sec.; -MO yards, 49sce.; 800 yards, linin. 57seeg mile, 4min. 22sec.; 3 miles, I Imin. irOsee.; G miles, 31min. 45sec.; marathon, 2hr. doming 120 yards hurdles, M.Hscc.; 4-10 yards hurdles, 55 sec.: broad jump, 23ft; hop, step and jump, 47ft.; high jump, oft 2in; pole vault, 12ft 2in; shot putt, 45ft; discus throw, 135 ft; javelin throw, 175 ft; hammer throw. 140 ft.
