36-Year Low Rainfall Record May Be Broken
UNLESS more rain falls tomorrow and on Monday the rainfall in Whangarei for October will be the lowest for 36 years.
That means ,66in of rain must fall by Tuesday morning to'equal the fall in October, 1913. when only 1.62 in of rain was recorded. Rain did not look likely today, allhough some parts of the sky were overcast.
The average fall for October is 4.72 in. while the maximum recorded was 10.50 in in 1926. October, 1945, was the month when Northland's worst drought in history began. Rainfall was 3.37 in, 1 24m below the average of 4.61 in. It was a month of southerly winds and low temperatures. So far this month ,96in of rain has fallen in 10 days. No rain fell on the other 18 days.
As yet, only the usual spring demand for water had been experienced the borough engineer (Mr 1. A Cromiei said this morning.
