Happy Issue For Mile

The Manaia Handicap, of one mile, is the other important first-day event. Paul, Beaute, Gay Coronach and Bouquet have accepted for both the Cup and this race. Foxfable, 9.0, has made progress in his recent work and, as he has previously raced well on the course, may be among the favourites. Paul and Beaute have recent form and may contest this event Challenger and Happy Issue have 8.7. Challenger has disappointed this season.

Happy Issue has made progress with recent racing. She has won on the track, represents good class, and may produce a sterling effort. She should pay her way on the trip.

Spandau and Loud Checks have 8.6. At her last start, Spandau finished third under equivalent weight, in the seven-furlong Flying Handicap at Waj[pukurau, on October 8. Phalamint and Miss Baimsfather were first and second. Loud Checks likes soft going. Her latest efforts have been below standard. Her last win was on August 6, over seven furlongs at Hastings. Gay Coronach, 8.4, could surprise. Silver Birch and Sir Sydney have 8.2. Silver -Birch has been racing fairly well in classics and is assured of solid support. Sir Sydney needed his two races this season and may be seen to better advantage soon. The others have 8.1.

Bouquet may be better suited in the Cup. Lord Dink, Jouster, Dukedom, Scotch Meadow and Kon Tiki have not shown form recently. Foxfable and Paul are sure to be among the favourites. Silver Birch is handily placed. Happy Issue is good class and makes appeal. Sir Sydney is the most likely to surprise. Whynot seems to be on the verge of

better form and will have friends.

Lady Ruthex and Beverley Hills have made a lot of headway in recent weeks and should contribute towards expenses on the Northern trip. < Brucena is a mai'e worth watching in the immediate future. The manner in which she stayed on in her races at Ellerslie indicated that the mile and a quarter of the Hikurangi Handicap would not be too far for her. She may surprise.

Ihe three-year-old Sir Tavia ‘is becoming more solid. He is worth keeping in mind. The two-year-old Beau Sabreur is speedy. Atomic represents fairly good class for a hurdle event. Last year Jon Rosa won a double at Whangarei for the Goosman-Muir owner-trainer combination. Nlloch sports Mr Goosmart’s colours this meeting and hails from the same stable. He will be admirably suited by the distance.

Atonement won impressively at Ellerslie. He may win again at Kensington.

The Pimpernel has run some good races fresh and the mile of the Farahaki Handicap will suit him nicely. Swift Beau has been working keenly at Ellerslie and might surprise soon.

Jamboree is much more solid than previously and consequently is staying better. He has an opportunity in the Spring Plate to extend his record.

Final Cast has good pace, but is very small. Around the Kensington course, he may upset much-better-fancied candidates.

•The Gold Nib filly Black Melody has pace above average. She is beginning to form up and appears more solid. She may atone shortly for past failures.
