Heavy Entries For Whangarei Stock Show

FROM the large numbers of entries received in the various classes it is evident that the Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s spring stock show, to be held at Kensington Park on November 11 and 12, will be another highly successful achievement for the society which, in recent years, has gone from success to success.

The society’s secretary (Mr P. D. Corsbie) this morning gave an indication of the large number of exhibitors who will be competing, and, from his remarks, it was apparent that the society will lose nothing by its decision to revert from autumn to spring shows.

The premier jumping event of the show, the Whangarei jumping competition, which carries £IOO in prizemoney has drawn 30 entries—just one more than last year. They represent the cream of the horses, and they include apart from local jumpers, a number of Auckland horses «and a strong team from the Waikato.

entries have been received for this class.

Trade space inquiries have been numerous, and it is stated that, in general, the exhibiting lirms have sought more space than they had last year.

Sideshows, stalls and various other amusements will be at Kensington Park in good numbers for the entertainment of the crowds.

In the hack and hunter classes, which have been well supported, about 470 entries have been received,

This is approximately the same number as last year, although there are more hunters and fewer hacks.

750 PAY ENTRIES In the 40 odd classes of the pony and juvenile section a total of 750 entries has been received. This is more than double the total for the 1948 show double the total for the 1948 autumn show, when there were 374 entries. On this occasion, however, there are more classes and they will extend over two days, whereas last year the pony ring was in use for one day only. The heavy entries in these classes reflect the keen interest being taken in pony clubs throughout Northland, and the ponies which will be seen at the show will come from the Kaeo, Kaikohe,, Bay of Islands and Whangarei districts. An innovation which should be well received in the pony section is the mounted marching teams’ competitions, in which six teams of four ponies have so far been entered. They will be required to carry out drill movements like an ordinary marching team on a prescribed course. This will be an excellent test for team work and control on the part of the young riders, whose ages range from eight to 16 years.

DAIRY CLASSES. Competition will be strong in the dairy cattle sections where the various classes have attracted 186 entries. Most of them v are for the Jersey classes, but Ayrshires will be strongly represented. As the time of the year is not entirely suitable for fat stock and beef breeds, entries in these classes are not large, but they are said to be of good quality and the total number is looked upon as encouraging. For the same reason entries in the pig sections are lighter than they were last year but some classes will see strong competition. The fact that the show date is not very suitable to pig-breeders might well remedy itself for the 1950 show. One hundred entries, which is an improvement on last year's total, have been received for the sheep classes.

A brand new feature for Whangarei shows will be the sheep dog trials which will give townspeople an opportunity of witnessing an unusually interesting type of competition. Good
