Hamilton’s £28,000 War Memorial

HAMILTON, Thu. (Sp.).—Extension of the existing War Memorial Park along the Waikato River to Hamilton East is planned as the memorial to the men who fell in the Second World War.

A deputation from the Hamilton City Council waited on the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry) to seek the Government £1 for £1 subsidy on the memorial, but the Minister was “not too sympathetic.” The chairman of the deputation (Mr A. J. Denz) reported pointing out to tire Minister that the proposal to extend the "existing park along the river had met with the unanimous support of the citizens of Hamilton.

It was stated by the deputation that the scheme for memorial community centres most favoured by the Government was accepted in principle by the City Council, and such a building would be erected when building restrictions eased. This would not be a memorial, however. The city engineer was instructed to prepare plans for the park to enable work to be commenced.this summer.
