Monowai Joins R.S.A.
AUCKLAND, Fri. (Sp.» - The Union Steam Ship Company’s passenger steamer Monowai is now an honorary member of he Auckan honorary member of the Aucktion. The liner had the most varied war service of any New Zealand ship, having been first an armed merchant cruiser and later an infantry assault ship. “Although her deeds speak for themselves,” said the president of the Auckland RSA (Mr A. P. Postlewaite), "this occasion makes maritime history. “This liner is the first ship to be given the honour of wearing the RSA badge.” “The tribute, paid by the men of a wonderful division, was gratefully accepted by all the ship’s complement,” said the Monowai’s commander (Captain G B. Morgan, D. 5.0., D.S.C.). Princess Te Puea Herangi, who early in the war gave the Monowai a model of the Tainui Canoe, a chieftain’s cloak and shield, was a guest of honour. The Dominion president of the RSA (Sir Howard Kippenbcrger) sent a message stating that “The stout ship Monowai is welcomed into the membership by the whole Returned Services Association.”
