Canadian Stole £5; Gaoled
AUCKLAND, Thu. (P.A.)—The excuse given by Charles Lynch, 33, Canadian seaman, before the Police Court yesterday, for stealing £5 from a Wellington hotel, where he was employed until August 22, was that his wife was ill and he wanted to send her to Auckland. Lynch pleaded guilty. The police said Lynch married a most respectable Auckland girl. They went to Wellington for the honeymoon. Lynch worked at the hotel and his wife became ill. He did not return to work after he stole the money. He was arrested in Auckland. Lynch had a criminal history in Nova Scotia. Lynch appealed for leniency for the sake of his wife. He expressed regret and assured the magistrate that he would not offend again. Mr J. Molding, S.M., said accused had a bad list of offences outside New Zealand, and last year was convicted in New Zealand for theft. Lynch was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
