Extra Pay For Handling Wheat
AUCKLAND, Thu. (Sp.)—Following a decision by the Waterfront Industry Commission, all Auckland watersiders who discharged bulk wheat from eight ships between February, 1947, and last June, will each receive a retrospective payment of 9d an hour as an extra rate.
A claim for 2/- an hour awaiting the attention of the suspended Waterfront Industry Authority will not be prejudiced by the payment. The decision provided that an extra rate of 1/4 an hour granted since June as the result of an agreement between the Union Steam Ship Company, agents for the wheat ships, and the union would be made retrospective to February, 1947. Waterside workers have, in fact, been paid 7d of ihis amount since February, 1947, when the commission advised the Auckland branch of the union that the subject wjould again be considered and that any further payment would be retrospective.
