Re or Entrances To Kaitaia Premises

KAITAIA, Wed. (Sp.)—Certain property owners had already signified their willingness to give land required for the provision of a rear entrance roadway for business premises in Kaitaia.

Cr E. M. Clark gave this information to the Kaitaia Borough Council on Monday night when the need for this step was again discussed. Rear entrances were essential to reduce congestion on Commerce Street, councillors stated.

A suitable alleyway could be provided if front and rear property-own-ers would each make Bft of land available across the width of their sections, said Cr R. C. Williams.

Rights-of-way would also be needed for sewers and storm-water drains, added Cr N. E. Senn.

“Does the council expect propertyowners to hand over the land as a gift?” asked the Mayor (Cr D. Archibald, senr.).

In doing so they would increase the value of the holdings considerably, Cr Senn replied. All owners would have to be approached for their reaction to this suggestion, said Cr F. Weber. The council would then know how it was placed. The meeting decided to approach the property-owners concerned in providing a rear-entrance roadway for a limited portion of the business area only, and to concentrate on this scheme as an initial stop. The meeting also confirmed the council’s new transport control by-law which will give authority for the council to exercise control of traffic and parking by special order. The new provision was aimed particularly at securing improved parking arrangements for the town, the town clerk (Mr W. H. Atkins) stated.
