Doctors May Be Mere Technicians LONDON.—The Joint Board of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons is accused of being “the worst offender in the tendency to make doctors mere technicians,” in a leading article in this week’s British Medical Journal. Referring to diploma offers, it says that the danger of special diplomas is that they would ease the way to special practice for doctors who could not pass such general examinations as those for Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and Member of the Royal College of Physicians. This, says the article, would be to the detriment of medicine and the public. The FRCS of England was .the hallmark of this general competence and no additional diplomas should be needed to show that the FRCS. was competent to practise in any particular field. Pointing out that the drift to specialism was continuing, the writer said that the young doctor who sought to avoid the most arduous medical lifegeneral practice—found before him today a tempting array of special diplomas. The acquisition of -any one of those enabled him to stake his claim as a specialist. The article adds: “If this tendency continues, medical men will cease to be ‘doctors,’ men more, or less learned, and instead become mere technicians able to tinker with local parts of the human machine. . “The unfortunate patient with no one to see him as a whole person will pass along a conveyer belt to be assembled perhaps by an administrator in a central records office.”—Reuters.
