WASHINGTON, Mon.—Senator Robert Taft (Republican—Ohio) urged a speedy American return to friendly relations with Spain as a step toward strengthening the North Atlantic defences. Mr Taft, who leads the Republican policy committee in the Senate, said that Spain ought to be invited into the community of nations prepared to fight the advances of Communism. “There is great strategic value in having the friendship of Spain," he said. “She is in a key military position as far as Europe is concerned. “There is no reason why we should, not recognise her fully in a diplomatic way and send an Ambassador to Madrid.”
