Cattle, Footprints Led To Capture

WELLINGTON. Wed. (P.A.L The movement of startled cattle and footprints in the sand were two clues which led to the arrest in the lower Wairarapa late yesterday, afternoon of the two escaped prisoners from Ml Crawford gaol, Wellington. On the police party's arrival at Western Lake footprints indicated that the prisoners were in. the vicinity, ana the police party split up. A mob of cattle became startled and police, making for the direction in which the cattle were looking, came to a cliff face immediately below which they saw the two prisoners lying in some scrub. They converged unobserved on the men who. when suddenly called on to surrender, offered no resistance. Tire men were unarmed and were still wearing prison jackets, but had changed their trousers for dungarees They were hungry and suffering from exhaustion and exposure, and had no provisions With them when arrested. They had been harassed by a police party from Wellington and had been on the move continuously, with little sleep, since their escape on Sunday morning.
