THE NORTHERN ADVOCATE Registered for Transmission through Die Post as a Newspaper. WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 28 1949. Kauri Area Near Whangarei
It will surprise many people in this district to hear that there is within two miles of Whangarei a section of land containing 400 acres of kauri trees. This was revealed last evening, when the Whangarei High School Board of Governors was discussing the future of its endowment land on the Otaika road. The board is of opinion that this area of standing kauri, in the direction of Kaigoose Valley, should be brought to the notice of the Lands Department, with tire objective of having it gazetted a national reserve. The chairman of the board described the area as a small Trounson Park, and another member, sug-
gested very rightly that it would be a pity if, in say, ten years’ time, the kauris were destroyed as a result of safeguarding measures not having been taken in time. A bill which it is expected will be presented to Parliament next month will contain provision for the transfer of all school endowments to the Lands Department, and the proposal that the 400 acres of kauris near Whangarei should be declared a national endowment is therefore a matter of more than passing interest. The existence of a kauri forest within walking distance of Whangarei would make a valuable addition to the tourist attractions of the district in years to come.
