Whangarei High School Board

A light agenda was discussed by the Whangarei High Schools Board of Governors at its monthly meeting last night. Included ;\mong the topics were: Building Additions. —Plans for additions to the maids' quarters, of rooms to accommodate the assistant matron or housekeeper, were approved, and authority was given for the work to commence. Finance.— Accounts totalling £956 13/9 were approved. Welcomed Back. —Mr M. W. Porter, for 11 years Grammar School representative on the board, was welcomed back by the chairman (Mr H. G. Carruth) as the new Education Board representative. Mr Porter took the place of Mr T. W. Bowman, who retired through ill-health. Two new members of the hoard, Messrs W. R McKinnon (a parents’ representative) and C. A. Lovell (Whangarei County Council>, were also welcomed by Mi Carruth. Election.—Mr Lovell was elected to the hostels’ committee. Resignations.—The resignations of Misses R. M. Greenslade and A. Blond, from the staff of the girls’ school, were approved. Refrigerator.—A large five-compart-ment, 40 cubic feet refrigerator is to be purchased by the board for use in the girls’ hostel. Quotes and illustrations of several models were considered, and it was decided to purchase the largest offering and to advertise for sale the one in use at present. Conversion of a room into a cool room was decreed impracticable, as by the time the insulation work was done the space would be too small. Tennis Courts.—Considerable discussion took place on the rescaling and levelling of the tennis. courts at the girls' school. It was stated that negotiations had been going on for three years, and it was hoped that operations would begin during this year's Christmas vacation. Mr McKinnon and the secretary (Mr R. G. Russell) .were deputed to travel to Auckland for the purpose of obtaining an additional grant to that already been given, in order that the work could commence. School Rolls.—Boys, senior department, 398; intermediate. 168; hostel boarders, 100. Girls: Senior, 424: intermediate, IG4; hostel boarders, 100.
