Varsity Students 7 Military Training
AUCKLAND. Tue. (Sp.)—The vicechancellor of the University of New Zealand, in a letter to the Auckland University College Council, said university students who became liable to do their compulsory military training during the year 1950 would have their period of training postponed until the long vacation of 1950-51. Reporting to the council, the college president (Mr W. H. Cocker) said that no request had been made that university students should be exempted from service or that they should not fulfil the full obligations required by the Military Service Act. The object of discussions of the Senate with senior members of the Services and the Secretary of the Department of Labour and Employment (Mr H. L. Bockett) had been to discover how best those obligations could be carried out with the least possible interference with university studies.
