Stonehurst Noble Laddie, Messrs B. P. and C. M. Hawken's reserve champion from Maunu, was by Willowdell Noble Duke from Stonehurst Gaiety Girl. His pedigree included six V.H.C. cows. Although the weather for the day was not kind, it was possible to conduct the show in the ring outside the big marquee erected for the sale. LARGE ATTENDANCE A large attendance of buyers from all parts of Northland and further south watched the show events with interest. Misty rain was hanging low over the nearby hills, but at Kensington Park the weather stayed reasonably dry. Conditions underfoot were not good, but most people came well equipped with goloshes and gumboots. Twenty-five bulls were entered in the class for bulls born prior to January 1. 1948, won by the show champion. In second place was Mrs.M. A. Edwards’ (Maunu) Breidden Ivor, while third place was filled by Stirling Prince Arawa. entered by Mr J. A. Moffat, Dargaville. Mr R. J. Duddy’s Broadlee Owl's Choice was placed first in the class for bulls born from January 1, 1948, up to and including August 14. 1948. Second place went to Ivanhoe Denote, entered by Mr J. A. Stevens, Maungatapere, with Stonehurst Noble Owler (B. P. and C. M. Hawken) in third place. The yearling class for bulls born since August 14, 1948, went to B. P. and C. M. Hawken’s reserve champion Stonehurst Noble Laddie. Stirling Mana’s Bondsman (Mr J. A. Moffat, Dargaville) was second, with H. E. Johnson and Co.'s (Kiripaka) Stanton Amigo in third place.
HANDLING CRITICISED The judge (Mr G. Fields, Kumeu) commenting pn the show, said that while entries were well tip to.standard in quality, there was room for improvement in the handling of some of the bulls in the ring, particularly from a showmanship point of view. /There was also a good deal of room for improvement in the actual shmv ring, where conditions made it difficult to judge, and at the same time, were not to the advantage of exhibitors.
Mr Fields said that a larger and more level show ring was desirable. Speaking of the show events he said that the junior yearlings were a strong and even class.
' The senior yearlings also comprised a good class, the winner being a fine specimen. The standard in the two-year-old class was not as high as that of the previous two classes, but the winner, which won the championship ribbon, was outstanding in his class, being well finished, with a good deep body and clean lines. > About 350 buyers crowded into the marquee tent to see the sale commence. INTEREST QUICKENED Bidding started quietly and it appeared that the bulls may have been hard to sell, but interest quickened after the first 15 lots had been dealt with and bids came faster. The first really high price of the sale came when u.e 18th lot (G. and E. Worthington’s Midland Handsome Owl) was offered. Competition was keen for this splendid yearling, and the bidding romped along to reach IGOgn. This price was paid by Mr D. McCathie, of Ruakaka. Moffat’s third-prize two-year-old, sold to Mr W. Hallmond, Dargavillc. This bull won second prize in the (ype and production class at the Northern Wairoa Show.
