AUCKLAND, Mon. (P.A.) did not have receivers we would not have thieves.” said Senior-Detective Campin in the Police Court today, when William James Hopkins, 61, waterside worker pleaded guilty to receiving 70 yards of rayon valued at £23/8/3 and bacon valued at £l/10/-, the property of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company.
The police said the rayon was pillaged from the ship Taranaki by some members of the crew.
Accused’s explanation was that he bought the material from an unknown man in a hotel.
Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., said he had no doubt accused knew where the goods came from. He sentenced Hopkins to two months’ hard labour on one charge, and one month on the other, the terms to be concurrent.
