WGHS Succeed In Major Presentation
Twelfth Night 7
Shakespearean plays are not easy to perform, and consequently arc very seldom attempted for public entertainment in, Northland. In presenting “Twelfth fright” in the Town Hall the pupils of the Whangarei Girls’ High School are to be complimented on their initiative and congratulated on their performance. Opening their season yesterday with a matinee for pupils of both high schools, they were able to keep the attention ,of a capacity house right through the unabridged version of the play. The costuming is colourful and accurate in detail and the players’ voices, generally, bring out to the full the wit and humour of the Elizabethan period. By skilful use of lighting and backcloths the numerous scene changes were adequately portrayed. The play is educational and entertaining to adults and children alike, and it reflects great credit on the girls and production staff that they can succeed in such a major work.
AGREEABLY ASTONISHED “Having had the privilege of seeing the matinee of “Twelfth Night,” I was most agreeably astonished at the quality of the entire presentation," writes Mr F. W. Reed in a letter to the Advocate.
“The acting was surprisingly goodin a Shakespearean play a thing never easy.
“As for the costuming, there was not a false note, and it alone was well worth the charge for admission. “All things considered, Whangarei will miss a thing it should see if it permits this to escape its notice. It is a credit alike to the school and the town.”
Public performances will be given in the Town Hall tonight and tomorrow night.
