Mr F. W. Furkert

OBITUARY

WELLINGTON, Tue. (P.A.) Mr Frederick William Furkert, Wellington city councillor and former Chief Engineer and Under-Secretary of the Works Department, died in hospital last night at the age of 72. He had been in hospital for many weeks. Born at Ross, Westland, Mr Furkert was educated at Hokitika High School, Wellington College and Otago University. He served with the Works Department for 39 years, rising to the position of head of the department before his retirement in 1932. His services with the department brought him in close association with many large projects in New Zealand, such as the Main Trunk railway, Otago irrigation scheme, Otira tunnel, Mangahao, Arapuni and Waikaremoana hyro-electric works and the Tawa Flat deviation.

A former president of the New Zealand Institute of Civil Engineers, Mr Furkert recently gave £SOO to found a scholarship in engineering.

He held the decorations of Companion of St Michael and St George, awarded in 192 G, and the Order of the Brilliant Star, an award made in 19.47 for Chinese war relief work.
