Success Of Bay W.l. Works Court

KAIKOHE. Mon. (Sp.)—Thirteen institutes took part in the second Works Court held by the Bay of Islands Federation of Women’s Institutes. Those participating were Kaikohe, Kaikohe Maori, Moerewa, Okaihau Okaihau Maori, Paihia, Waitangi Maori, Opua, Karetu Maori, Oromahoe, Motatau Maori, Tautoro Maori and Rawene. Opening the exhibition, the federation president (Mrs B. Gillett) made special mention of the work of the Maori institutes and referred to their craft displays. She urged them to keep this work alive. The president also spoke of the beautiful work done by members of the pakeha institutes. JUDGE’S PLACINGS

The work had been judged the previous day, leaving only the actual displays to be judged on the day of the exhibition. * . In the pakeha section, Paihia gained first place, with Rawene second and Okaihau third. Mrs W. Shaw, on behalf of the winning institute, accepted the shield from Mrs W. Deeming, of Opua, whose institute had won it last year. BEST MAORI EXHIBIT The Kelly Cup, for the best Maori court, was won by Karetu, with Okaihau Maori a close second, only 20 points behind. Motatau was third. Mrs Armstrong, of the Okaihau Maori Institute, winners in 1943, handed the cup over to Mrs B. Smith, who accepted for Karetu. In making the awards, the judge spoke of the high quality of the work displayed and congratulated tfce federation on its staging of the exhibition. She specially mentioned the display of the Waitangi Maori Institute. Two pois—one long, one short—were given by Waitangi members. Votes of thanks were passed to the convener (Mrs W. H. Moor) and to the Kaikohe Institute, whose members acted as hostesses.
