Men On Short Leave
AUCKLAND. Mon. (Sp.»— Auckland needs a club or hostel for servicemen on short leave.
Captain A. C. Duckworth, D. 5.0.. D.S.C., RN, said this to the annual meeting of the Ex-Royal Naval Men’s Association yesterday. “I have much at heart the question of a hostel or White Ensign club for my sailors on shore leave in Auckland," said Captain Duckworth. “During the war. I understand, there were several such places for the servicemen. but they were all closed down after the' war. “Why there should be provision in war and not in peace I do not know,” Captain Duckworth continued.
“The great naval ports in England all' have their Royal Naval Sailors' Rests. White Ensign Clubs and Union Jack Clubs. Chief and Petty Officers' Clubs, and so on.
“A great port like Auckland is no 'different from 'any of the other great ports of the world. “It offers the same temptations and bad company to the young and inexperienced man. and these temptations arc probably aggravated by the state of rigor mortis into which the city sings on Saturdays a..d Sundays. Captain Duckworth submitted that the matter was a straightforward and obvious welfare requirement, which was a Government responsibility. The case had not yet been presented to the Government, but when it was it would be found to be a good one.
