Truck Over 130 ft Bank
When his truck toppled backwards over a 130 ft bank, a fanner of Pipiwai had a narrow escape from serious injury yesterday afternoon. He is: Mr Rangi Shortland, aged 32. Mr Shortland was returning home by truck to his farm and had reached the end of a small turn-off on the Omauri Road, when he was confronted by another man and a sled coming in the opposite direction. Backing on to the road to allow the sled to pass, he misjudged the distance and the truck fell over the cliff. THROWN CLEAR. A slight slope on the bank kept the truck turning over. Throwing Mr Shortland clear and then pinning him underneath, the truck came to rest in a creek about sft deep. Mr Shortland managed to crawl out of the water and waited on the bank for assistance. A party of six Maoris carried Mr Shortland on a mattress lo the top of the hill. He was admitted to the Whangarei Public Hospital at 4.40 p.m. suffering from a fracture of a small bone in the right leg and a severe bruising of the right shoulder. His condition was reported as satisfactory this morning.
