Polar Bears For Auckland Zoo
AUCKLAND, Wed. (Sp.) About £SOO will be paid by the Auckland Zoo within the next few months for a pair of young polar bears from the PolyZoo Co., Ltd., of Antwerp. The company offered one or more pairs of polar bears from one to two years of age. The curator of the Auckland Zoo (Lieut.-Golonel E. R. Sawer) said yesterday that the offer was a very attractive one. Previous inquiries in England revealed that the market price for a pair of bears there was about £BOO.
None was available when he made his inquiries. The species was an outstanding exhibit in any zoo and as the Auckland Zoo had a specially designed pit for polar bears, the fact that it was empty was a source of disappointment to many visitors. The sole occupant of the polar bear pit died last inonth after a seven-year tenancy. The bear 'was thought to have been more than 20 years old and had become senile.
Wellington Zoo has had a rush of births recently. A young lioness has given birth to a cub, four young kangaroos are carrying young in their pouches, .two emus are sitting for the first time for seven years, and five wallabies are proud mothers.
