Unsteady Ecuador

In the light of the earthquake which devastated a large portion of Ecuador a few days ago, a press comment last month makes interesting, if ironic, reading. Early this year, it was stated, President Galo Plaza of Ecuador stood on his doorstep and watched his police overcome a new revolt, “I am witnessing a demonstration of the national sport,” he said. It was at least the fifth revolt in five years—not courting little ones.

President Lasso, former delegate to the United Nations, had already been in office for the average .term of a year. He was the 22nd President in 22 years. Some indication of the exeitability of these people was given in a riot after one of the radio stations had broadcast a version of H. G. Wells’s “War of the Worlds” last February, Some listeners didn’t like the programme. They stoned the radio station, and then burnt it. Troops broke up the riot.
