LAST year thousands of visits by adults and children, equal to more than the total population of the borough of Whangarei, were made to the rooms of the Whangarei branch of the Plunket Society.

Reporting to the 26th annual meeting of the branch yesterday, the Plunket Sister (Miss M. O. Armstrong) said visits of babies to the society’s rooms in Whangarei and outlying districts totalled 5683, while 6142 visits were made by adults. At the end of December, 1948, 23 more baby cases and 76 more pre-school children were under supervision.

Nearly 250 children were immunised against ' diphtheria at the Plunket rooms. “This makes one face up to the fact that the sisters have done some hard work during the year,” said the patron, who is the Mayor (Mr W. Jones). “I only wish there had been Plunket nurses in my day,” said Mrs Jones. “It would have been a great help in bringing up nine children.” Mrs Jones expressed disappointment that more support was not given to the society by mothers. There was an attendance of about 40 at the meeting. Mrs Jones said she thought mothers should attend, even if they had to bring their babies with them. The balance sheet showed that cash funds were increased by £7O during the year, and now totalled £Bl3. The excess of assets over liabilities was £872. Main receipts during the year were: Government grants £526, contributions by local authorities £ll2, street collection, dance donations £470. and subscriptions £129. COMMITTEES’ HARD WORK. In her report, the president (Mrs C. J. Jones completed her 20th year as a committee member, and for this long period of loyal and faithful service she was made a life member of the Plunket Society.” Several members expressed gratification at the branch’s sound financial position and thanked the committee

members for their work. Mr Jones congratulated the society on the year’s work and said that he thought the society was deeply rooted in the district. Although the financial position was good he thought that no credit balance could be too large for the society. Officers elected were: Patron, Mr W. Jones; president. Mrs C. J.
