Northland Pony Club Camp At Waitangi
KAIKOHE, Tue. (Sp.).—The Bay of Islands Pony Club proposes to hold a summer camp at Waitangi next January and application has been made to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry) for a grant to erect cooking and sanitary buildings. The camp is intended to include all the northern pony clubs and it is expected that from 150 to 200 members will take part.
It is hoped to be able to give the children a course of training, and, if possible, to examine those sufficiently proficient for their C certificate. Rides over the surrounding countryside will be arranged and swimming and picnics will give other entertainment. The opportunity will be taken to have the children shown over the historic Treaty House and grounds. Present intention is that the camp shall be concluded with a gymkhana. Organised by Mr A. D. W. Woolcott, of Northland College, the Kaikohe branch of the Bay ofs Islands Pony Club held a picnic meeting on Mr A. W. Edwards’ farm at Ngapuhi on Sunday. Mrs Edwards acted as hostess to 14 riders and more than 30 spectators, friends and club members. A presentation was made to Mrs A. E. R. Hen wood during the afternoon as recognition of her work on behalf of the branch and the club. The 14 riders were divided into teams for competitions and games.
Tuition was given by the junior instructors. Misses Shirley Henwood and Myra Milne in mounting and dismounting, leading, figure-of-eight pivoting and jumping. Both instructors also gave riding displays. A treasure hunt completed the day’s sports events. Next meeting of the club will be held cn Mr F. C. Dibble’s Lake Omapere farm next Sunday, when the Kaikohe, Kerikeri, Okaihau , and Ohaeawai branches will take part. Three members of the club, Misses Henwood, Milne and Rona Hughes, will ride from Kaikohe to Whangarei by way of the Pipiwai-Ruatangata road to give displays at a Whangarei pony club meeting on September 3.
